Dental implants are a long-lasting solution for replacing missing teeth, designed to restore the look, feel, and function of a natural smile. By replacing the tooth root and supporting a custom restoration, dental implants help improve comfort, stability, and confidence while supporting long-term oral health.
At Candlewood Dental Care, dental care is guided by the experience of Lorraine Burio, DMD, who has completed advanced training in cosmetic and restorative dentistry and remains active in professional dental organizations. With decades of experience serving the New Fairfield community, Dr. Burio provides implant-focused care centered on precision, function, and lasting results.
What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are replacement tooth roots. Implants provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable replacement teeth that are made to match your natural teeth.
Dental implants are designed to integrate with the jawbone, creating a stable foundation that closely mimics the structure of a natural tooth. This integration helps maintain bone health and prevents the shifting of surrounding teeth that can occur after tooth loss. Because dental implants are securely anchored, they allow patients to eat, speak, and smile with confidence, without the movement or discomfort often associated with removable tooth replacement options.
What Are the Advantages of Dental Implants?
There are many advantages to dental implants, including:
How Successful Are Dental Implants?
Success rates of dental implants vary, depending on where in the jaw the implants are placed, but in general, dental implants have a success rate of up to 98%. With proper care (see below), implants can last a lifetime.
Can Anyone Get Dental Implants?
In most cases, anyone healthy enough to undergo a routine dental extraction or oral surgery can be considered for a dental implant. Patients should have healthy gums and enough bone to hold the implant. They also must be committed to good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Heavy smokers, people suffering from uncontrolled chronic disorders — such as diabetes or heart disease — or patients who have had radiation therapy to the head/neck area need to be evaluated on an individual basis. If you are considering implants, talk to your dentist to see if they are right for you.
What is the process of placing an implant?
You may need to wear a removable appliance to temporarily replace the missing tooth. This will keep the teeth from shifting into the open space. You will be referred to an oral surgeon, who will place the implant in the bone. Once the implant is integrated into the bone (usually 4-6 months), we will take impressions and the lab will fabricate the abutment and crown that will fit over the implant. Once the prosthesis is completed, we will screw the abutment into the implant and cement the crown on top of the abutment. We use a special temporary cement for implants, so that if we should ever need to access the abutment, the crown can be removed without damaging it.
Does Insurance Cover the Cost of Dental Implants?
Great news! Most insurances are now covering a portion of the cost of implants. We will send an estimate to your insurance for the abutment and crown and the oral surgeon will send an estimate for the surgical placement of the implant. Please remember that if benefits are paid to the oral surgeon, our estimate may not be accurate by the time the implant is ready to be restored.
